Melasti, as a sacred Hindu ritual, was meant to cleanse all of world from all the filth of sin, through the symbolic act of acquiring the Tirta Amerta(the water of life). Balinese people believe, that considered as the source of Tirta Amerta could be taken from a water source such as Lake or Ocean. These water sources provide life for all living beings, including mankind. For this reason, melasti ceremonies are always held in special places such as beachside or lakeside.
In Melasti ceremony, people will come in groups to water sources. Each group comes from one comunity, such as banjar or village and will held melasti along with their sacred instruments of worship in their communty temple such as the statues / pratima / other sacred instrument. Each member of the community also prepares offerings according to their respective abilities.
Furthermore, the rituals continued with panca sembah(praying) by all members of the group and followed by drink holy water. After the procession, the instruments of worship were paraded back to the temple to prepare several other ritual procesion.
Melasti is Balinese annual ritual order prior Balinese New Year Celebration (Nyepi), and that will be an unforgettable moment for tourists who have the opportunity to witness it.
